CIQS – Prairies & NWT Cost Connections March 2019

Executive Update

Message from the President

During what has felt like an extremely long winter, I revel in the fact that the first day of spring is now less than a month away. Spring is a bastion of new beginnings, much like the fresh start for our local members as we are now officially a chapter of CIQS with a 92% member approval. Thank you to all members that voted on the dissolution of the Affiliate at the Special Meeting last month. Read more about this meeting in this issue of Cost Connection.

CIQS National is also taking advantage of some fresh beginnings by the selection of three new members to the CIQS Education Committee, all which were reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors at the quarterly meeting held in Toronto on January 18-19, 2019. The Board is proud to welcome the newest members of the CIQS Education Committee:

• Tulsi Regmi, PhD, PQS, MCIOB
• Rob Wilson, BSc(Hons), MRICS, PQS, MNZIBS
• Nicholas Charlton, PQS

Thanks are also extended to the returning committee members:

• Wendy Hobbs, PQS(F) – Committee Chair
• Roy Lewis, PQS(F)
• Indu Elapatha, PQS

Winds are changing at the Board of Director’s level as well as Craig Bye’s resignation offered Erin Brownlow an opportunity to step into the Vice Chair position. The Board congratulates Erin and welcome her to her new role. Mr. Bye, PQS(F) resigned from the board earlier this year due to personal reasons. The Board thanks him for his dedication and service to the National Board over the years and wish him all the best.

Membership renewal notices and invoices also received a facelift this year, with membership fees now available as one National fee with all Affiliate fees removed. The Board is excited to report that the CIQS Registrar shows strong growth across the board with increased membership for our PQS, CEC and Associate categories. Even student memberships are on the rise after a significant decrease in 2017. The Board plans to take advantage of this increased interest in student membership by focusing more heavily on student recruitment across the country for 2019-2020.

In our last issue I mentioned that CIQS National entered into a contract with a graphic design agency to freshen up our marketing material. I have been meeting with the marketing team and I am pleased to report that the design of our main brochures is well under way with an expected launch later this Spring.

All these positive, engaging and amazing changes seem incredibly appropriate as CIQS National celebrates its 60th Anniversary. I look forward to jumping in feet first to keep this momentum going.

As ever, please feel free to michaelgabert@bty.com with feedback or questions about CIQS. I commit to getting back to you as quickly as my schedule allows.

Sincerely,

Michael Gabert, PQS

Membership Update

Special Meeting Update

CIQS - Prairies held a Special Meeting of Members on Thursday, January 17, 2019 in Edmonton, Alberta. The application for the wind-up and dissolution of the Affiliate under the Alberta Societies Act needed approval amounting to 75% of the votes cast. While the vote on May 3, 2018 results of 74% met the requirement for 2/3 of the votes cast threshold and compliance as stated in our by-laws it did not meet the threshold of 75% for the Societies Act for Dissolution of a corporation. Therefore, a Special Meeting of Members was called in line with timelines noted in our By-laws to hold a vote on this item – Wind up and Dissolution of the Affiliate. The results of the vote at the Special Meeting of Members on January 17, 2019 were 92% in favour.

Thank you to all members who attended the meeting in person and those who submitted their proxy.
